Spring has typically been known as the season for cleaning. Usually, this means your home or your car; however, it can also be applied to your fitness routine. There is no need to wait until the New Year to start a scheduled workout plan.
These tips will help kick-start a new you this spring!
1. Set up a schedule, but be realistic
You’ve heard this tip before, but most people find it hard to follow. If you pre-plan your week’s workouts you are more likely to do them. Establishing a schedule means your fitness will become routine, so you’ll soon find your body looks forward to each session. However, it’s very important to be realistic. Look at how many hours you currently exercise each week and use this as a gauge. Plan to increase that amount by 10% each month. You’ll be more likely to achieve your goals and feel good about yourself if you set achievable targets.
2. Team up with friends!
You are far more likely to stick to your spring routine if you do some of your workouts with friends. Having someone who relies on you will encourage both of you to stick to the program. Plus, it will make your exercise even more enjoyable. When people ask you to catch up this spring, suggest going on a walk or playing a game of sport instead of sitting down for a meal.
3. Create a stretching routine, and stick to it
Stretching is extremely important to keep your body supple, strong, and free from injury. Again, it’s important to be realistic when creating a stretching routing. Set aside achievable blocks of time for a regular stretching routine – even five-minute is enough to make a difference. A great time to stretch is straight after you’ve showered or exercised because your muscles are warm and more elastic.
4. Stay hydrated
As the warmer months approach, it’s important to stay hydrated, particularly during your new exercise routine. Make sure to always carry a bottle of water with you. Sip from it during and after you work out.
5. Get sporty
Exercising can be particularly good fun if you’re involved in some kind of team sport. Playing a game of basketball, tennis or squash will really get your heart rate up. Organise a few mini-sporting tournaments or social matches with your friends. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never tried the sport before; you’re still guaranteed to get some exercise and you might really enjoy it!
6. Step off the scales
Please – don’t leap into exercise just because you think you need to lose weight. Exercise should be done regularly and always to improve and maintain your health and wellness – it might help your waistline but that’s really not the point! If you follow the Hopewood Lifestyle approach to food and exercise your body will find its own naturally healthy weight and you will feel and look terrific!
Once you’ve created and started your new spring fitness routine, remember: just enjoy it.
