Hot weather can bring on many common skin problems. Chapped lips, frizzy hair, dry skin and stained teeth are common year round. Before you rush off to a pharmacy or the nearest beauty counter try some of the very best remedies from Mother Nature!
Heal your cuticles
If you’re spending a lot of time on the beach, in the sun or doing a lot with your hands you may notice dryness in your cuticles. To maintain beautiful hands year round add a few drops of coconut oil to a pea-sized dollop of your favourite hand cream and rub generously into each of your cuticles. For enhanced benefits, wear plastic gloves for 10 minutes to let it sink in.
Heal dry skin
Spending too much time in the sun can dry out your skin. At the end of a long and hot summer, rejuvenate your skin in the shower! Mix the juice of one lemon with five tablespoons of sugar and one tablespoon of olive oil, apply in the shower and scrub before rinsing well. Lemon contains natural alpha-hydroxy fruit acids to loosen the “glue” that binds dead skin cells together, while sugar is a gentle exfoliator that cleans pores and increases cell turnover. Olive oil is rich in vitamin E to nourish and condition skin.
Bring out the pearly whites
It’s natural for teeth to become stained over time. Certain foods, drinks and lifestyle choices can all contribute to discoloration. To whiten teeth naturally, mix three teaspoons of baking soda with one teaspoon of water to form a paste. Scoop up a bit of the mixture with your toothbrush, and use it to brush thoroughly. Repeat two to three times per week.
Tame the mane
Heat and humidity can affect the softness, health and appearance of your hair. To tame the frizz mash half an avocado and two teaspoons of olive oil and massage the mixture into clean, damp hair. Leave it on for 15-20 minutes before rinsing thoroughly. Follow up with a light conditioner. Both ingredients are deeply moisturizing, which helps tame frizz-prone hair.
