The best way to feel refreshed in the morning is to get a good night’s sleep the day before. Instead of reaching for that morning coffee after a terrible night’s sleep, we recommend trying these simple and natural tips to feel more refreshed each morning!
Set a good routine
This means going to bed at the same time each night. Try having a relaxing bath or shower to finish the day and then a nightly cup of (decaf or herbal) tea. This will help relax your mind and body, encouraging it to slow down.
Turn off your technology
Watching television or using technology in bed can prevent you from getting a good night’s sleep. Exposure to the blue and white lights provided by our technology (such as our iPhones) prevent our brains from releasing melatonin, a hormone that tells our bodies it’s night-time. This can negatively impact our ability to ‘switch our brain off’ at night.
So, we recommend turning off your technology at least an hour before bed.
Stop drinking coffee
Drinking coffee eight hours before you go to sleep can have negative impacts on your ability to have a good night’s sleep.
The Hopewood lifestyle suggests removing caffeine from your diet completely. Removing caffeine from your diet can reduce your anxiety levels, alleviate headaches, reduce the risk of stains on your teeth and, very importantly, can help hydrate your body.
Get enough sleep!
It will be difficult to feel refreshed if you are only getting 2-3 hours of broken sleep each night. Aim for a minimum six to seven hours.
We also recommend getting up as soon as you’re awake. So avoid hitting your snooze button each morning – it’s likely to restart your sleep cycle and make you feel groggy.
Try yoga or meditation
This will help to induce restful sleep because it helps calm the body and mind.
The practice of yoga can help unlock us on physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels. It’s a holistic form of exercise, with several components, including asana, pranayama, meditation and deep relaxation techniques.
Meditation has many health benefits. It’s an excellent way to relieve stress; clear and calm the mind; relax; deal with anxiety; help us become less reactive and more tolerant; helps create a balanced lifestyle; can lead us to gain inner wisdom or ‘insight’; can make us a better person, and so the list goes on.

Being prepared for your next day means you will be less likely to lay in bed feeling anxious and uneasy each night. Have a plan, make a ‘to do’ list, decide what you’ll wear. This will also help shave off some time each morning, making if far easier for you to get up and get on with your day.
