Most of us don’t think twice about how we breathe. However, good breathing patterns can have a significant impact on our overall health and wellbeing. We take approximately 25,000 breaths a day, so it’s important we make the most of them!
Breathing provides our bodies with much-needed oxygen, allowing it to function properly. Breathing helps to reduce toxins in our body – so poor breathing habits can inhibit our ability to achieve optimum health.
Oxygen is the most vital nutrient in our bodies. We can survive without food for weeks and without water for days, but without oxygen we will die within minutes.
It’s essential for the proper and efficient functioning of the brain, nerves, glands and internal organs. The brain requires more oxygen than any other organ. If it doesn’t get enough, the result is mental sluggishness, negative thoughts, depression and eventually our vision and hearing also declines.
Oxygen supply in our body can decline as we get older through more limited lifestyle habits, inadequate exercise, or limited exposure to fresh air.
Oxygen purifies the blood stream.
A purified blood stream is critical for energy and rejuvenation. The quickest and most effective way to purify the blood stream is by taking in extra supplies of oxygen from the air we breathe.
Try the following strategy to re-set your breath and become more aware of how you breathe:
- Inhale deeply (through the nose)
- Hold this for a few seconds
- Deeply exhale (through your mouth)
- Repeat 5-10 times – you should feel your diaphragm moving freely when you do this.
Practicing yoga and/or meditation are excellent ways to become more actively aware of your breathing habits. There are a number of articles on this website about both – we recommend exploring them today.
