It’s a new year and, like lots of people, you’re probably making some wellness resolutions and feel determined to find a ‘new you’ in 2018. Getting fit and healthy is one of the most popular resolutions but, as the weeks fly by, so can your motivation to stay on track. Building our willpower is the key to kicking our wellness goals. With the will there is a way to overcome the personal barriers that often stop us from reaching our full health and wellness potential.
The good news is boosting willpower is easier than you might think. Much like strengthening other parts of your body, willpower is a mental muscle you can train.
Here are three easy steps you can take this new year to keep pushing through and conquer your goals:
Take baby steps: There is a science behind willpower that goes something like this… The more you use it, the stronger it becomes. Defining your goals is the first step to conquering them. Once your goals are defined, you can strategise how to overcome any obstacles. Every time you find yourself craving that late night snack and you say “no,” you add another notch your willpower belt. Similarly, every time you complete that workout you were dreading, your willpower becomes stronger.
Exercise mindfulness: A simple way to improve willpower is to simply be more mindful of yourself and your surroundings. We often become so lost in thought throughout the day our actions become automatic. Taking the time to assess the here and now will force you to think about why you are making certain decisions. It will increase your ability to focus and resist temptation.
Think long-term: The tough thing about building willpower is the need to exercise this “muscle” over and over to become strong. Have total faith in yourself and trust that you will build your willpower into the new year, step by step, until it’s no longer a forced thought. Every time you overcome an obstacle, it’s proof you can make hard decisions for yourself. Persevere and your willpower will continue to get stronger.
