We know the benefits of keeping fit and healthy, but why do people become addicted to working out?
Well, every time we exercise the body releases endorphins, serotonin and dopamine that work together to produce a sense of happiness which leaves the body feeling content and more relaxed.
How do these natural chemical reactions occur?
Endorphins: During a workout, your body responds to the elevated endurance and emotional effort you experience. In response, your body produces endorphins that supply a natural high which also helps to alleviate anxiety and depression.
Serotonin: Doing aerobic exercises, like running and biking, will increase serotonin production and release. serotonin lifts our mood and helps us feel positive about ourselves and our life. When you isolate yourself and don’t reinforce your achievements with self-worth, your body stops producing serotonin, at which point feelings of loneliness and depression can creep in. When you feel important and significant, for example during group exercise, the body celebrates by providing the body with a serotonin boost.
Dopamine: Every time we achieve our goals, dopamine release promotes a surge of pleasure and encourages us to take action towards further goal setting. As soon as you achieve that first small goal dopamine helps sets you up for continued success.
