Natural ways to soothe rashes

Skin rashes can be extremely itchy and uncomfortable. It’s important not to scratch as this can irritate the rash further and lead to infections. We’ve listed five natural remedies that you can use to help soothe a skin rash.

Oatmeal
Oats have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that can help to soothe itchy, dry skin. It is also believed that the oils in oats can help to restore the skin. It is best to use colloidal oatmeal or finely ground oats as it can bind to the skin and form a protective barrier, helping to clean and hold moisture against the skin. Add one cup of oatmeal to a warm bath or mix it with water to create a paste that you can apply to the affected area.

Aloe vera
The clear gel in the leaves of the aloe vera plant can help to relieve irritated skin. Aloe vera has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. It can add moisture to the skin, reduce swelling and help to speed up the healing process. Fresh aloe vera is best but you can buy aloe vera gel. Apply the aloe vera gel directly onto the affected area and let your skin absorb it before putting clothes over it.

Coconut oil
Coconut oil is a wonderful moisturiser, helping to hydrate and smooth skin. It has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory effects which can help to soothe itchy, irritated skin. It is best to use virgin coconut oil as it is less processed and better retains its antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Coconut oil can be applied all over the body or just onto the affected area.

Epsom salts
While Epsom salts are commonly used to relieve muscle aches and pains, they can also help to relieve itchy, scaly skin. The magnesium in Epsom salts can help reduce inflammation and soften the skin. Add two cups of Epsom salts to a warm bath and soak for at least 15 minutes.

Apple cider vinegar
Apple cider vinegar can help dry, itchy skin and skin infections due to its antiseptic and antifungal properties. It can also help to restore the skin’s natural pH level, increase moisture and protect against bacterial infections. Add two cups of apple cider vinegar to a warm bath or create a wet body wrap by dipping gauze into a cup of warm water with one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar mixed in.
