Physical activity

There is strong evidence that reducing sedentary behaviour and increasing overall physical activity is associated with reduced cardiovascular events and death. Based on an initial consultation with the exercise physiologist, we will measure participants baseline activity using a Fitbit physical activity tracker for seven continuous days. From information provided in a Physical Activity Readiness questionnaire, participants will be given a personalised, home-based exercise regime.
The initial trial goal will be to reach at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity per week within the first three months of the program.
During this time, participants will have twice weekly appointments via a video call or face- to-face with their exercise physiologist. If participants are symptomless during the first three months of the physical activity intervention, the following nine months will aim to vary the prescription in terms of mode, duration and intensity of activity. Participants will be offered one 30-minute session with the exercise specialist per month during this second phase.
