What music does for our mood
Music can have a huge impact on our mood. Chances are your favourite song evokes emotions that make you want to listen to it again and again. We all have unique music tastes and like to listen to it in certain ways. Maybe you have a favourite radio station for the car, an upbeat workout playlist or love blasting sing-along tunes in the shower.
Music affects the body in a variety of ways and listening to music on a daily basic can help our overall wellbeing. Studies have demonstrated that pleasurable music may lead to the release of neurotransmitters associated with reward, such as dopamine. Listening to music is also used to alter mood or reduce stress.
We also associate music with memories. When listening to music we engage many parts of the brain, triggering connections and creating associations. Lyrics may also resonate with a listener’s personal experience and give a voice to feelings that are difficult to express.
So, next time you want to boost your mood, try playing some of your favourite songs.
