Embrace the ocean’s healing powers

Many of us long to live or holiday by the ocean, and for good reason. Spending time by the sea benefits both our health and our soul. There’s something uniquely calming about the ocean, and its waters possess numerous healing properties.

Physical benefits

  • Ocean water is rich in mineral salts like sodium, chloride, sulphate, magnesium, and calcium. These minerals can soothe skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema and help clean and heal wounds.
  • Magnesium in seawater reduces inflammation and muscle pain while hydrating and moisturizing the skin.
  • Swimming in the ocean can alleviate hay fever symptoms. Studies show that nasal irrigation with salty water reduces sinus inflammation and helps with infections.

Mental benefits

  • Research shows that being near the sea makes us happier, improves wellbeing, and reduces stress and anxiety. In other words – it’s good for our mental health.
  • Marine biologist Wallace J. Nichols highlighted the meditative state we experience when near water. He called this a “blue mind” and demonstrated how it can enhance creativity and conversation quality.

Next time you can, head to the ocean. You’ll leave feeling rejuvenated!
