How breathwork supports immunity

Most of us think about breathing as something the body simply does: automatic, unconscious, unremarkable. But the way we breathe has a profound and measurable impact on our immune function, stress response, and overall vitality. In winter, when our systems are under additional pressure and our nervous systems tend toward tension, conscious breathwork is one of the simplest and most powerful tools available to us.

When we are stressed, our breathing naturally becomes shallower and faster, activating the sympathetic nervous system — our fight-or-flight response. This sustained low-level stress response can suppress immune function over time, leaving us more vulnerable to the colds and viruses that circulate in the cooler months.

Slow, deliberate diaphragmatic breathing does the opposite: it activates the parasympathetic nervous system, lowers cortisol, improves oxygen delivery throughout the body, and supports the lymphatic system, which is a critical component of our immune defence.

You don’t need special training or equipment to begin. One of the most effective and accessible techniques is box breathing; used by athletes, emergency workers, and meditators alike. Inhale for four counts, hold for four, exhale for four, hold for four. Repeat for five minutes. This simple pattern has been shown to reduce anxiety, lower blood pressure, and improve focus within a single session.

Try making breathwork part of your morning routine this winter, even five minutes before you get out of bed will help. Over time, you may find you not only get sick less often, but you navigate the grey days with more equanimity and ease. Your breath is always with you. This winter, let it be your medicine.
