Winter skin wisdom

Winter is the season when our skin works the hardest, but often gets the least support. Cold air outside and warm, dry air inside create a double assault on the skin’s moisture barrier, leaving many of us with skin that feels tight, flaky, or irritated. The good news is that a few simple, natural adjustments to your skincare routine can make a significant difference; without the need for expensive products or elaborate regimes.

The foundation of healthy winter skin is hydration, from the inside out. In cooler weather it’s easy to forget to drink enough water, yet skin cells require consistent hydration to function well. Herbal teas — particularly chamomile, rooibos, and ginger — count toward your daily fluid intake while offering additional skin-supportive antioxidants.

For your external routine, winter is the time to swap lightweight summer moisturisers for richer formulations. Look for products that contain naturally nourishing ingredients such as shea butter, jojoba oil, rosehip oil, or aloe vera. Apply moisturiser to slightly damp skin immediately after bathing, when pores are open and absorption is optimal.

A weekly exfoliation using a gentle scrub removes the build-up of dry cells that can dull winter skin, allowing moisturisers to penetrate more effectively. Try combining finely ground oats or brown sugar mixed with a little coconut oil. And don’t neglect your hands and lips, which are often the first areas to show winter stress. Treating your skin kindly in winter is an act of nurture in the fullest sense. What you give your skin now will help you glow in spring.
