Winter hair care

We give our skin a lot of attention in winter, and rightly so. But our hair and scalp deserve equal consideration. Cold air, reduced humidity, hot showers, and the constant movement between heated and unheated spaces all conspire to leave hair dry, dull, and prone to static and breakage in the cooler months.
The scalp is where good hair health begins. In winter, the scalp can become dry and flaky, not from dandruff but simply from lack of moisture. A gentle weekly scalp massage with a warm oil (coconut, jojoba, or sweet almond) applied before shampooing, can make a significant difference. Massage increases blood flow to the follicles, loosens dry skin, and delivers conditioning nourishment directly where it is needed. Leave the oil on for at least 20 minutes, or overnight if you can, before washing.
When it comes to washing, resist the urge for very hot showers. Hot water strips the hair’s natural oils along with everything else, leaving it more vulnerable to dryness. Warm water is sufficient, and a cool final rinse will help the hair cuticle lie flat, adding shine.
Look for shampoos and conditioners that contain nourishing natural ingredients: argan oil, shea butter, aloe vera, or oat extract.
After washing, avoid vigorous towel drying, which roughens the cuticle and causes breakage. Instead, gently squeeze excess water and allow hair to dry naturally wherever possible.
Once a week, a simple deep conditioning treatment, whether a store-bought mask or a homemade blend of ripe avocado and olive oil, can genuinely restore winter-stressed hair. Beautiful hair in winter is not complicated. It simply asks for a little more attention.
