Five foods for healthier skin

When it comes to having healthy skin, what we eat is just as important as what we use on the outside. In terms of improving skin health, people look for many options but diet should never be overlooked. The foods we put into our bodies can impact our skin health by reducing the effects of sun, clearing blemishes, lessening wrinkles or enhancing the tone of your skin. Foods such as citrus fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds and certain types of fish, are a few among many to include in your diet for healthier skin.

1. Citrus Fruits
Citrus fruits are high in vitamin C and this is an essential part of collagen production. With high levels of vitamin C, your skin will be protected against premature aging and wrinkles as well as promoting faster healing of blemishes and wounds.

2. Pumpkin Seeds
Pumpkin seeds contain an exceptionally high amount of zinc, which is one of the main minerals essential for healthy skin. Along with vitamin C, zinc helps to facilitate the production of collagen in the skin, reduces pimples and blemishes, increases the regeneration of skin cells and strengthens cell membranes.

3. Almonds
All nuts are beneficial for your body in their individual ways. Almonds in particular have impressive amounts of vitamin E, which help to naturally protect the skin from the sun. In a nutshell, the vitamin E and antioxidants found in almonds can help to slow the signs of aging and help to prevent skin cancer.

4. Broccoli
We all know fruit and vegetables are an important part of any healthy diet. Nature’s miniature trees, broccoli, contain high amounts of vitamin C and vitamin E – which both have significant benefits to skin health. This duel defence protects your skin from the damage of free radicals and the sun.

5. Fish
Whilst fish may not be the first food that comes to mind when we think ‘skin health’, certain fish types such as salmon, anchovies and trout contain significant levels of omega-3 fatty acids, which are considered ‘good’ forms of cholesterol for your body. These fatty acids help protect skin against sun damage, inflammation, strengthen skin cell membranes and facilitate smooth passage of fluid in cells.
