Make nature your holiday tradition

In the warmth of summer holidays, few rituals feel more grounding than a walk in nature. At Hopewood, we cherish the simple joy of stepping outside, putting our feet on the earth and breathing deeply. Nature walks offer more than movement; they’re moments of presence, discovery, and shared wonder.
This December, why not make nature walks a family tradition?
Discover what’s nearby
Seek out gentle trails close to home: bushland loops, creekside paths, or coastal boardwalks. Choose routes with shade, varied terrain, and space to pause. Bring binoculars, sketch pads, or a field guide to deepen the experience.
For example:
- A birdwatching field guide might show pictures of different species, their calls, habitats, and seasonal patterns.
- A wildflower field guide could help you identify blooms by colour, petal shape, or region.
- A bushwalking field guide might include maps, trail markers, and notes on local flora and fauna.
Make it playful
Why not turn your walk into a scavenger hunt, or a sensory adventure? Create a list of seasonal finds, different textures, colours, sounds, and scents. Encourage kids (and adults!) to notice the small things: a feather, a buzzing bee, the scent of lemon myrtle.
Ideas to include:
- Something soft
- Something that smells fresh
- A bird call
- A leaf with jagged edges
- A flower in bloom
Bonus: bring a small pouch for collecting natural treasures to use in crafts or nature mandalas later.
Pause and nourish
End your walk with a simple picnic, such as Hopewood’s fruit skewers, herbal iced tea, and homemade bliss balls. Lay out a cloth, sit together and share what each person noticed or felt during the walk. It’s a beautiful way to slow down and connect.
Hopewood-style picnic picks:
- Watermelon and mint salad
- Cucumber sandwiches with lemon balm
- Chilled chamomile and apple tea
- Coconut-date bliss balls
