The power of glute exercises

The glutes are the biggest muscles in our bodies. They are necessary for nearly every movement that requires our lower body and they help to stabilise our pelvis. Doing exercises to strengthen your glutes can improve your mobility and help you to feel better.

Everyday tasks
Because our glutes are involved in so many movements, doing strengthening exercises can improve our ability to perform everyday tasks. This includes:
• Walking and running
• Sitting with good posture
• Lifting things off the ground
• Walking up stairs
• Bending down in the garden

Better posture
Our glute muscles help to stabilise our body and maintain good posture. If our glutes are weak or do not function properly, other parts of the body such as the shoulders, torso and pelvis can be pulled out of their natural alignment. This leads to bad posture. Strengthening our glutes can help to correct this.

Prevent pain and injury
The glute muscles play a very important role in supporting the lower back and performing movements that involve the lower body. If the glutes lack strength and do not function properly our risk of pain and injury increases. We can experience pain in the lumbar spine, hips and knees if other muscles have to overcompensate to support the lower back. We can also become more susceptible to lower body injuries such as shin splints, Achilles tendonitis and ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) injuries. By doing strengthening exercises, we can reduce the risk of pain and injury in the lower back and lower body.
