Exercise outside this summer

Summer is a great time of year to get outside. Take advantage of the nice weather and exercise outdoors. Not only can it make working out more enjoyable, but it can help you get your vitamin D.

Here are some tips to help you stay safe while you’re exercising outside.

Be sun smart

In summer, the UV rays can be much stronger. It’s important to protect ourselves from sunburn and heat stroke when we’re exercising outside. Apply sunscreen about 20 minutes before you go out to ensure it has time to bind to your skin and offer you the best protection. Wearing a hat and sunglasses can also offer greater protection for your face and eyes. We also recommend working out in a shady spot where possible.

Keep up the fluids

It’s important to stay hydrated when exercising and even more so in the heat. Drink a few glasses of water before you go out. Take a water bottle with you so you can sip on it during and after your workout.

Wear light clothing

Our choice of clothing can help us to feel more comfortable and avoid overheating as we exercise. Wearing loose, light-weight clothing can help to keep you cool. Lighter colours can also help to reflect the heat. Some active wear is also designed to wick away sweat to keep you cool and dry.

Listen to your body

Exercising in the summer heat can be challenging so it’s important not to overdo it. Take time to rest, especially if you’re feeling dizzy or faint. If you’re finding it difficult to manage the heat, consider shortening your workout or lowering the intensity. You may also like to try exercising in the morning or evening when it’s cooler.
