Time to get swimming

Now’s the perfect time to head to the beach or get in the pool. Swimming is a fantastic form of exercise. It’s fun and it’s great for all ages and abilities. It can help us to build strength and burn calories while also being gentle on our joints. It isn’t just great for the body, it’s also great for the mind.

We share some of the amazing health benefits associated with swimming.

Brain health

A 2015 study found water-based exercise can increase blood flow to the brain. This can help to improve our memory and cognitive function. 

Breathing

Swimming can help to increase lung capacity. When comparing swimmers and runners in a 2012 study, researchers found swimmers had better lung capacity and breath control. 

Longevity

Researchers explored the relationship between six different types of exercise and a person’s mortality risk in a 2017 study. They found swimming regularly can reduce a person’s risk of dying by any cause by 28% and a 41% decrease in the risk of dying by heart disease.  

Stress relief

A 2012 study, commissioned by Speedo, explored the psychological benefits of regular swimming. They found 74% of participants reported swimming lowered their stress and tension, and 70% reported it helped them to feel mentally refreshed.
