Healthy eating at home

With many of us spending more time at home, we may be finding it more difficult to make healthy eating choices. The change in routine, uncertainty about the future and not being able to see loved ones can have us reaching for snacks and indulging on less-than-optimal foods. But there is another way!

Eating well can help us to cope and feel better now and into the future. It can help to improve our focus, strengthen our immune system, reduce mood swings, increase our energy, and boost our self-esteem.

Here are three healthy eating strategies to help you through lockdown:

Start your day with a nourishing breakfast – our bodies need fuel to provide the energy we need for the day. That’s why it’s important to start the day with a nutritious breakfast. This should contain fruit or vegetables, protein (in the form of nuts, seeds, yoghurt and milk including rice, almond, or soy) and whole grains, such as oats. This combination of fibre, complex carbohydrates, protein and healthy fats (from nuts and seeds) can help you stay fuller for longer and maintain your blood sugar levels meaning you’ll be less tempted to snack.

Eat regular meals – we understand how easy it can be to lose track of time while you’re at home. But eating regular meals is vital to maintaining a healthy diet. We suggest setting regular mealtimes. It can help you break up your day and establish a routine and it makes it a lot easier to stick to a healthy eating plan and combat unnecessary snacking.

Prepare healthy snacks – with easier access to food in our homes, the temptation to snack can be even greater. Having a nourishing breakfast and eating regular meals can help us to resist the urge. But in the case it doesn’t, you can prepare healthy snacks for yourself. As with breakfast, healthy snacks should include fibre, complex carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats. Some examples include vegetable sticks with hummus, Greek yoghurt and fruit, and apple slices with nut butter.
