Mental health tips for the festive season

We are approaching the festive season, which can be a very overwhelming and stressful time for many people. Here are some tips to ensure you look after your wellbeing during this time:

Set realistic expectations: It’s easy to set expectations for the “ideal festive celebration”, however when these expectations are not met it can negatively impact our mental health. Set realistic expectations and focus on the things we truly value and what we can control during this period.

Plan ahead: Planning ahead can help us to avoid stressful situations. Remember to plan some time for yourself to unwind and, if you will be on your own for Christmas, consider doing things you really enjoy like curling up with a book, cooking your favourite dish or watching a much-loved movie.

Sleep: The festive season is a busy time of the year, make sure to prioritise getting enough sleep. Maintaining a good sleep schedule is essential for our mental health and wellbeing.

Stay active: regular exercise is especially important through the festive season as it helps us maintain our physical health, mental health and wellbeing.

Check in with yourself and relax: Checking in with ourselves during the festive season can assist us in understanding how we are feeling. This can allow us tune into our mental health, making us feel calmer. Take plenty of time to unwind and partake in activities that make you feel relaxed.
